It got me thinking about the effects of making these types “forever” of promises to another.

These promises, or vows, are sometimes referred to as soul contracts, but can also manifest as psychic cords or spiritual attachments.

In Western Culture, we don’t have accepted rites of passage - and breaking a bond, a romantic bond, is a rite of passage. Sure you can breakup, get a divorce, go no contact - but these practical measures don't dissolve the psychic, spiritual and energetic connections you have to one another.
